Position Summary

Develops research strategy and leads research at the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) on topics that inform Emergency Medicine (EM) certification programs, the EM specialty, and the EM community. Leads the study design and IRB approval as well as ensures the timely preparation, editing, and submission of manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals. Collaborates closely with Directors and external researchers to ensure timely completion of ABEM-approved research proposals. Provides staff leadership for ABEM’s Research Committee.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Develops, leads, and implements a research strategy through collaboration with the Board of Directors that includes project development, completion, and research publications.
  2. Provides oversight and ensures timely completion of approved research to publication. Writes, edits, and revises manuscripts for scientific journals, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with journal guidelines.
  3. Directs any necessary writing assignments for manuscripts, collates and edits authors’ submissions, and ensures completion of all writing assignments by agreed upon due dates.
  4. Leads the conception of new research projects, executes project plans, and identifies and meets timelines.
  5. Collaborates with Assessment Services staff on research and evaluation projects especially for data analyses and methodology development. Identifies priorities and ensures completion of data analyses.
  6. Manages the ABEM Research Committee including agenda and report development. Serves as primary author for at least 75% of Research Committee meeting material.
  7. Creates and manages relationships with external resources (including researchers) for research projects.
  8. Attends and presents at external meetings as needed and appropriate (e.g., SAEM Annual Meeting). Supports Director presentations on ABEM research.
  9. Creates original content, ensuring all work is free of plagiarism and adheres to copyright regulations.
  10. Ensures all written materials meet high standards of scientific integrity and ethical guidelines.
  11. Develops and oversees an annual budget for research activities.
  12. Staffs the certification examination administrations and additional meetings as
  13. Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • M.D./D.O. (with M.S., M.P.H, or higher preferred) or Ph.D. in health services research, public health, assessment and evaluation, psychometrics, statistics or other research-related field required.
  • At least five (5) years of related experience conducting research.
  • A consistent track record of peer-reviewed journal publications. Should be the lead author on the majority of these publications.
  • A record of presentations at national or international conferences in support of research agenda.
  • Experience with statistical analyses programs (R, SAS, or SPSS) preferred.
  • Experience with advanced statistical methods including multi-variate analyses, factor analysis, HLM, and SEM
  • Experience managing a research budget.
  • Record of positive team development and organizational collaborations. Strong relationship and culture-building skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to develop research projects and plans.
  • Sophisticated knowledge of data sets, data analysis, and statistics programs.
  • Ability to complete and submit research for IRB review.
  • Familiarity with the process of manuscript preparation and submission for peer-review publication.
  • Excellent writing skills including proper grammar and style.
  • Highly self-motivated, requiring limited direction.
  • Strong customer service skills for both internal staff, Directors, and external partners.
  • Adhere to the values of wisdom, resilience, integrity, empathy, trust, and collaboration.
  • Strong problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise sound judgement and make decisions based on accurate and timely analysis.
  • Must maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality about sensitive matters and all organizational information.
  • Adherence to standards of ethics and professionalism in research and in the workplace.
  • Ability to travel up to 10 percent of the time (5 weeks or less per year).
