Business Education Series: Business Planning for the Future

A lot of small-to-medium size businesses devote time and focus on their near-term future but may not think of what 5-10 years will bring. The value of a business can often be in the ability to transition it to a new owner, but how does a business owners set themselves up to be successful in this arena? 

Topics covered include business succession planning; tax considerations, both capital gains and estate tax; and financial planning.


Mark Kellogg, Shareholder, Firm Vice President, Treasurer, Fraser Trebilcock

Mark E. Kellogg leads the firm's Business & Tax department and has devoted over 30 years of practice to the needs of family and closely-held businesses and enterprises, including business succession, cottage law and succession planning, estate planning, real estate law, contract law, tax law and planning and non-profit law.

In addition to having a wide breadth of experience practicing law, Mark is a certified public accountant. This skillset gives Mark a unique insight into business and tax implications relating to planning for his clients.

Mark holds several leadership positions for legal organizations dealing with business and probate and estate planning and is currently serving as the Chair of the State Bar of Michigan Business Law and Probated and Estate Planning Sections. He has also been actively involved in various charitable, trade and community organizations throughout his professional career. Mark has served on Fraser Trebilcock's Board of Directors for several years and is currently acting in the roles of Vice President and Treasurer.

Mark is also a member of the international organization of Attorneys for Family-held Enterprises (AFHE), currently serves as a Member of the Finance Committee for Highfields, Inc., and has recently been elected to City Council for the City of DeWitt.

Lee B. Reimann, JD, CPA, CFP®, Vice President, Relationship Manager, Tri-Star Trust

Lee is a CPA and an attorney who brings 25+ years of professional experience to her role as a Relationship Manager. Lee spent the majority of her career as an estate-planning attorney helping clients plan for their future. However, with her accounting background, Lee also knows that for business owners the future of their business is a fundamental part of the financial plan. Therefore, Lee helps clients to take a 360-degree view of their financial future. Lee also believes in serving the community that has given her so much. She is a past president of Ingham County Bar Association; Greater Lansing Estate Planning Council; and Rotary Club of East Lansing. In addition, she has served on the Boards of Legal Services of South Central Michigan; Helping Women Period; and the Capital Region Community Foundation. She is also an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and a former Commissioner of the East Lansing Planning Commission.
