Lansing Economic Club: Energy Outlook

Tuesday, May 17, 2022 (11:30 AM - 1:30 PM) (EDT)

Description

Dr. Dean Foreman, chief economist at American Petroleum Institute, will discuss the current outlook for U.S. and global oil and natural gas markets at the May 17 Lansing Economic Club.

Dr. Foreman, who is known for his extensive knowledge of energy markets and ability to use advanced analytics to assess market risks, will discuss the factors influencing market conditions before and after Russia's unprovoked war on Ukraine, including macroeconomic expectations and the impact of price inflation, supply chain disruptions, and workforce issues. Dr. Foreman will also focus on the pace and need for capital investment and enabling pipeline infrastructure and trade through the energy value chain, including zooming in on Michigan’s economy, which requires abundant and low-cost energy to grow and maintain its competitiveness.

Additional issues to be addressed include:

  • The roles of price inflation and relative U.S. economic performance on the U.S. dollar and oil prices.
  • The quadruple headwinds of the workforce, supply chain, financial and energy policies have impeded oil and natural gas development.
  • The global state of energy investment, in context with the energy transition.
  • Key energy productivity trends and break-even prices.
  • Influence of comparative balances between U.S. regional production and pipeline capacity on the outlook.
  • The foundational role of effective U.S. energy policies on U.S. economic and national security.
